ABOUT THE PROJECT

Caltrans recently finished construction on a multi-lane turbo roundabout at the intersection of highways 25 and 156 in San Benito County. This is a critical safety project that will immediately reduce the number and severity of collisions, while maintaining traffic flow and efficiency, at the intersection.

Schedule

  • Construction Start: June 2022
  • Construction End: Early 2024

To help residents, commuters and other users of the future turbo roundabout, Caltrans and the COG created an educational “how-to” video that explains how to use the new facility.

Construction Update:

Caltrans and the SBCOG appreciate the traveling public’s patience during construction, as major construction milestones took place in late 2024. Here is a short list of current construction updates:

  • SR 156 continues to operate in one lane in each direction, during this phase in construction
  • A new roundabout at Bixby Road is open, which also consists of one lane in each direction during this phase in construction.
  • Union Road/Mitchell Road is fully reopened at SR 156 .
  • The bypass exit from eastbound SR 156 to 4th Street/Business 156 reopened.

Drivers are reminded that SR 156 is still an active construction zone and encouraged to slow down and pay attention to temporary road signage and portable message signs alerting travelers of the upcoming traffic changes.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Caltrans is improving San Benito Route 156 by constructing 5 new miles of 4-lane at-grade expressway from The Alameda in San Juan Bautista to Business Route 156 near Hollister. This project will fill a “gap” in the expressway system and provide a continuous expressway system from the connection at U.S .101 to the City of Hollister. New project features also include a roundabout at Bixby Road.
