ABOUT THE PROJECT
Caltrans recently finished construction on a multi-lane turbo roundabout at the intersection of highways 25 and 156 in San Benito County. This is a critical safety project that will immediately reduce the number and severity of collisions, while maintaining traffic flow and efficiency, at the intersection.

MAJOR CONSTRUCTION AND TRAFFIC CHANGE ALERT
Traffic to shift onto new SR 156 Expressway lanes, Union Road to reopen, Bixby Road roundabout opens, and short-term Mitchell Road closure begins
On the night of October 10, a major milestone will be reached on the SR 156 Improvement Project as Caltrans will be shifting all SR 156 traffic onto the newly constructed Expressway lanes, just south of the existing highway between San Juan Bautista and Hollister, weather permitting. During this stage of construction, Caltrans will maintain at least one lane in each direction along the new SR 156 expressway.
Drivers should be aware of other major, concurrent milestones associated with this traffic shift:
- Union Road, just south of SR 156, will reopen!
- A new roundabout will be opened at Bixby Road, which will consist of one lane in each direction during this phase in construction.
- Caltrans will be closing a small part of Mitchell Road, just north of SR 156, for approximately eight weeks.
- The bypass exit from eastbound SR 156 to 4th Street/Business 156, which has been closed since the start of the project, will be reopened.
During these exciting changes, drivers are encouraged to slow down and pay attention to temporary road signage and portable message signs alerting travelers of the upcoming traffic changes.

ABOUT THE PROJECT
Caltrans is improving San Benito Route 156 by constructing 5 new miles of 4-lane at-grade expressway from The Alameda in San Juan Bautista to Business Route 156 near Hollister. This project will fill a “gap” in the expressway system and provide a continuous expressway system from the connection at U.S .101 to the City of Hollister. New project features also include a roundabout at Bixby Road.
